The Kyabirukwa Health Center, Level 3, Expansion of the Water Collection and Storage System (Need: critical and immediate)
General Information:
The Kyabirukwa Health Center, Level 3 provides central health care service to the children of the Kyabirukwa Convent Dairy Farm Community, and the children of regional communities extending to the surrounding children of nearby borders of Tanzania and Rwanda. The facility consists of five buildings.
Problem:
Children Carrying Water
A critical problem exists with the supply of water at the Center. The total daily demand for water averages 5,000 liters/day and only a two day back-up supply of stored water exists. A well needs to be drilled and a water pump installed for potable and other critical uses of water at the facility. Also the existing rain water collection system that currently collects water from one roof needs to be expanded to the total five buildings at the Health Center and a large underground water storage tank constructed to store the water. The water storage capacity of the new tank should not be less than for 90 days supply of water for the Health Care Facility which is the length of the duration of the summer drought. (90 days X 5000 liters/day = 450,000 liters). The three month 450,000 liters requirement, plus an expansion of 50% for the next two years projections sums to 675,000 liters for use during the yearly 3 month drought is the total capacity requirement for water storage from the underground storage tank. From the storage tank the water will be pumped to the health care facility on demand.
